Charmeka Newton – University of North Dakota
Healing Anti-Black Messaging
College of Education & Human Development at the University of North Dakota. Dr. Newton is also the owner of Legacy Mental Health Services, PLLC. She has over 20 years of experience in clinical, academic, and community settings, including teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels of higher education. Her work on internalized racism and anti-Black messaging has been featured in Newsweek, U.S. News & World Dr. Newton is also a member of the Michigan Board of Psychology, appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. She is a sought after psychology expert featured in prominent magazines and newscasts, recently featured on the June 2020 broadcast of West Michigan Woman, where she discussed how to have difficult conversations with your family about race.

David Buys – Mississippi State University
Still Growing While Growing Older: The Story of Agricultural Producers in the U.S.
David R. Buys, PhD, MSPH, CPH, FGSA is the State Health Specialist for Mississippi State University Extension and an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science, Nutrition, and Health Promotion at MSU. Dr. Buys leads research-based public health education in Mississippi’s 82 Counties with over $16 million in federal agency funding. He has authored 57 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Buys completed formal training in medical sociology, health services research, and epidemiology at Mississippi College, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is Certified in Public Health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners and a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Royal Society of Public Health.

Stefan Lovgren – University of Nevada Reno
Saving the River Giants
Stefan Lovgren is a research scientist in the College of Science at the University of Nevada Reno, as well as the communications director of the USAID research project Wonders of the Mekong. A journalist with more than 25 years of international reporting experience, he is a frequent contributor to National Geographic and the author of several books, most recently “Chasing Giants: In Search of the World’s Largest Freshwater Fish” (University of Nevada Press, 2023.

Royel Johnson – University of Southern California
DEI and Campus Climate
Dr. Royel M. Johnson is Associate Professor and Chair in the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California (USC). He is also the Director of the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates in the USC Race and Equity Center. An expert on college access, student success, and organizational change for racial equity, Johnson is lead editor of “Racial Equity on College Campuses: Connecting Research and Practice.”
