David, I thought you might be aware of todays’ great this Academic Minute.
Dr Boland,
Thank you for your research and contribution to the Academic minute.
I heard your segment on WAMC 90.2FM (Albany NY) as I started to wake up this morning.
As a network engineer, I have worked on Long Distance telephone networks and various IP networks, I always knew that the weird, “out of sync” feeling was due to computing time and network latency. Thank you for performing the research to verify my hypothesis.
In the late 1990’s telephone companies started to migrate away from their fixed lines to Voice over IP networks. The savings was significant. There was no argument against the change. The quality was always measured by frequency response and the delay was always explained away as “nominal”. Personally, I felt that the service was degraded, but price is often the final arbiter of a product.
Thank you for quantifying, analyzing and providing an accessible explanation in under 60 seconds. Truly a feat of public communication.
