Ryan Allen Soka University of America
Beyond the Numbers of Dead and Dying Colleges
Ryan M. Allen is the Associate Professor of Comparative and International Education and Leadership in the Educational Leadership and Societal Change Program at Soka University of America. His research centers on internationalization of higher education, EdTech, intersections between education and urbanism, and the East Asian region. He has published in numerous academic publications and popular outlets such as his most recent co-edited volume entitled Online Teaching and Learning in Higher Education during COVID-19: International Perspectives and Experiences (Routledge, 2021). He is the current host of the KIX E-MAP Podcast, where he interviews scholars, policymakers, and educators on national development on the Europe, Asia, Pacific regions. Dr. Allen holds a PhD in Comparative and International Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, an MA in International Relations from Yonsei University (Seoul, South Korea), and a BA in Public Relations from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Deike Peters – Soka University of America
Urban Nature in Need of Ecological Restor(y)ation
Deike Peters is a German-American environmental urbanist whose focus is on ‘getting cities right.’ She has published extensively on sustainable and green urbanism, rail- and megaproject-oriented urban redevelopment, gendered mobility patterns, active transportation, natural playscapes, and on planning theory and pedagogy. Before becoming a college professor, she was a bicycle activist and sustainable mobility advocate based in New York City and an international consultant and advisor to the World Bank and UN Habitat. Her current research focuses on ecological restoration and the creation of biophilic built environments that represent a fair-minded balance between human and non-human living spaces.

Wednesday
Marie Nydam – Soka University of America
Tracking Introduced Species on Coral Reefs
Marie Nydam has a BS in Evolution and Ecology from the University of California, Davis. She earned a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Nydam is a marine evolutionary geneticist who uses phylogenomic and population genetic tools to study evolutionary questions. She incorporates undergraduate researchers into all of her research projects, and frequently publishes with undergraduate co-authors. She particularly enjoys working with undergraduates who are interested in marine biology, ecology, genetics/genomics, and/or molecular biology.

Shane Barter – Soka University of America
Partial Sovereignty: Self-Government for Minority Nations
Dr. Shane Joshua Barter is Professor of Comparative Politics at Soka University of America. He earned his PhD in 2011 at the University of British Columbia. He has published several articles and books related to civilians in Southeast Asian secessionist conflicts, peace and elections, and the prospects for managing secessionism through forms of self-government.

Sandrine Simeon – Soka University of America
The Ethics, Aesthetics and Accessibility of Live Theater on Film
Originally from Paris, Sandrine Simeon completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Paris III, the Sorbonne Nouvelle, and received a master’s degree in film from Concordia University in Montréal before working in the film industry. Returning to her academic endeavors, she earned additional degrees in French and Francophone Studies from Penn State University, where she wrote a doctoral dissertation on the filming of live theater. Her research continues to focus on the filming of theater and the teaching methods of theater through film. She co-edited two volumes on anglophone and digital theater and published several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
