Monday, July 11th
Teddy Wilson – University at Albany
The Co-Occurrence of Illegal Gun Carrying and Gun Violence Exposure
Theodore “Teddy” Wilson is an assistant professor in the School of Criminal Justice in Rockefeller College at the University at Albany, SUNY. Teddy’s primary research interests include decision making (both on the part of offenders and criminal justice practitioners) and quantitative methods. His current research focuses on exapting constructs from behavioral economics that can be applied to improve understanding of offender and criminal justice practitioner decision making. He is also interested in unpacking and explaining racial and social inequalities arising throughout the criminal justice process. He earned his BA, MA, and PhD in criminology and criminal justice from the University of Maryland.

Patricia Strach – University at Albany
What’s Political About A Garbage Can?
Patricia Strach is professor in the Departments of Political Science and Public Administration & Policy and a Howard J. Samuels State and City Policy Center Fellow (2021-2022). With Kathleen S. Sullivan, she has written a book about the creation of nineteenth-century municipal garbage programs forthcoming from Cornell University Press. Strach is the author of Hiding Politics in Plain Sight: Cause Marketing, Corporate Influence, and Breast Cancer Policymaking (Oxford 2016) and All in the Family: The Private Roots of American Public Policy (Stanford 2007) as well as numerous articles. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar in Health Policy Research at Harvard (2008-2010) after receiving her doctorate in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2004)..

Stephen B. Holt is an assistant professor of public management at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany, SUNY. His research focuses on public sector workforce dynamics, public organization performance, and education policy and administration. In particular, he focuses on the role of representation and motivation in public workers’ delivery of effective and equitable services.

Ashley Fox – University at Albany
Pandemic Job Losses Increases Support for Medicare-For-All
Ashley Fox, PhD, MA is an interdisciplinary health policy researcher. Bridging policy studies, political science and demography, her research examines the politics and policy of public health and the effects of social policies on health outcomes. She is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Policy at University at Albany, SUNY.  She earned a BA and MA in Political Science from the University of Connecticut and a PhD in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard between 2009-2010 and at Yale University in the Division of Health Policy and Administration between 2010-2011.

Susan Appe – University at Albany
Does Effective Altruism Drive American International Giving?
Susan Appe is Associate Professor of Public Administration and Policy at Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy at the University at Albany, SUNY. Her research focuses on government–nonprofit relations and the dimensions and evolution of the nonprofit sector. She examines how government policy influences and shapes nonprofit organizations/NGOs, how and why nonprofit organizations form networks and their implications, and the relationship between civil society, foreign aid, and development. She is currently working on research projects related to diaspora philanthropy as well as about the roles of public administration and nonprofit organizations in mass atrocity prevention. Since 2020, Appe has served as co-editor-in-chief of VOLUNTAS: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations, an interdisciplinary journal and leading academic outlet for research on the third sector, publishing on topics related to civil society, nonprofit organizations, social enterprise, volunteering and philanthropy.
