Kristie Seelman featured on The Best of Our Knowledge

As always, host Bob Barrett selects an Academic Minute to air during The Best of Our Knowledge.

Each week this program examines some of the issues unique to college campuses, looks at the latest research, and invites commentary from experts and administrators from all levels of education.

For this week‘s edition (#1328), Bob has selected Kristie Seelman‘s segment that explores transgender discrimination. Kristie Seelman is an assistant professor in the School of Social Work at Georgia State University.

Dr. Kristie Seelman is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Dr. Seelman’s research focuses on improving social welfare services and education settings for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) people and addressing health disparities affecting these populations. Dr. Seelman has studied transgender individuals’ experiences in higher education and in crisis services, the role of gay-straight alliances for LGBTQ youth and young adults, and health care planning decisions among LGB and same-gender-loving older adults. She has published articles in the Journal of Social Work Education, the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services,Gender & Education, Children & Youth Services Review, and theJournal of Social Service Research. Dr. Seelman has been invited to write about her research for online media outlets including The Huffington Post and the Disruptive Women in Health Care health policy blog.

Dr. Seelman is the recipient of a 2-year contract from NIMHD as part of the NIH Loan Repayment Program for Health Disparities Research. The contract, worth over $50,000, assists health disparities researchers with paying off school loans. This award is for Dr. Seelman’s ongoing research Social and Behavioral Factors that Influence Health Disparities among LGB Older Adults and Transgender Individuals: Two Studies Using an Intersectional Lens.

Dr. Seelman’s professional background includes experience developing educational programs for low-income families, supporting and training young adult volunteers, conducting outreach to address childhood hunger, and offering research consultation to community organizations. Dr. Seelman received both her PhD and MSW from the University of Denver. She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Allegheny College.
